Get involved with UQIC

Real roles.
Not a favour.

UQIC ran 5,367 registrations across sixteen competitions this year, on five to six nights a week, and almost all of it is done by a very small number of people. These are the jobs we actually need filled, what they take, and what you get back.

What is open

Roles we actually need filled

Every one of these exists because the work is not getting done, not because it would be nice to have a volunteer. Two are open now. The rest open as the season turns.

Open now

Comp Night Content Crew

90 min a week·One season

Shoot photos and short video at one competition night a week, usually the night you already play. Fifteen good stills and a couple of clips is a full night's work. You keep full rights to everything you shoot and get a credit on every post.

Open now

Sport Group Moderator

15 min a day·One season

Run your sport's Facebook group. Post the draw, answer the handful of questions that come up every round from a script we give you, and keep the group civil. Entirely from your phone, and you never have to guess at an answer.

Opening November

Faculty and College Ambassador

2 hrs a week in peak·One season

Represent your faculty or college and bring teams into next season through your own tracked sign up link. Get your faculty onto the Steele Cup ladder and keep it there. The only role here with a number you can put on a CV.

Opening at O-Week

Event Crew

3 to 4 hr blocks·4 events a year

Staff the UQIC stall at O-Week and market day, and help run the come and try days, launch nights and presentation nights. No experience, no interview, no ongoing commitment. Pick the events that suit you and ignore the rest.

Opening at O-Week

New Player Welcome Host

About an hour·Two nights a season

Meet new teams at the venue in the first two rounds, make sure they know where to go, and get their captain into the right Facebook group on the spot. Two nights of commitment for the thing that decides whether a team comes back.

Opening at O-Week

Partnerships Research Assistant

2 hrs a week·One semester

Research and verify sponsorship prospects against a live pipeline: the right contact, the right decision maker, and why they would care about student sport. Entirely remote, entirely project based, and real commercial experience.

Opening at O-Week

Data and Insights Volunteer

2 hrs a week·One semester

Turn lead sheets and registration data into numbers the club can act on, including how many people who try us for free come back and pay. Real analytics experience on a dataset with thousands of records, and outputs that go to a board.

The deal

What you get back

None of this is payment, and we are not pretending otherwise. It is the set of things a club can give that a student actually wants.

UQ Employability Award hours

The Award's volunteering stream explicitly counts sporting clubs. It needs 75 volunteering hours alongside 75 work experience hours and five supplementary activities, so we are one part of it rather than the whole thing. We verify your hours within 48 hours of you asking, every time.

A reference you did not have to ask for

A written reference from the President, issued automatically when you finish a season or at 15 hours, whichever comes first. Most students never think to ask until they need one and it is too late.

A real title and a real email address

You get a uqic.com.au address and a title that describes the job. "Content Lead, UQIC" is a different thing on a CV to "volunteer".

Your name and your work, published

Your name goes on this website and your work is credited on everything we post. Photographers keep full rights to their own work.

The nights everyone wants to be at

Free entry plus a guest to the season launch and the presentation night, and priority entry into competitions that sell out before you get to them.

A seat in the room

Volunteers get a session with the Management Committee each season, and the person coordinating the program sits in as an observer. Access is the one thing students cannot buy.

How it works

Four steps, one hour of meetings

Volunteer programs die of admin. This one is built so that almost nothing is asked of you beyond the thing you actually signed up to do.

01

Apply

Seven questions, about three minutes. No CV, and for most of these roles no interview.

02

Induction

One hour, in person, before the season starts. The only thing all season we ask you to be at.

03

Do the thing

You get a one page guide for your role and one person to ask. Your first time is always paired with someone experienced.

04

Finish the season

Everyone finishes at the presentation night and is invited back. Your reference and your hours record arrive without you chasing them.

Two things worth being blunt about.

It is unpaid, and nothing is compulsory. You tell us the nights that suit you. Nothing happens if you cannot make it, nobody chases you, and nobody is expected anywhere. You can stop at any time, and if you do, you keep your hours record and your reference.

You report to one person, not to a committee. One name, one inbox, same day answer. You should never have to work out who to ask.

Where the line is

What volunteers never do

Our referees, scorers, timekeepers and venue managers are paid, and volunteers never do those jobs. If someone asks you to fill in on a competition night, the answer is no, and then you tell your contact. That rule protects you as much as it protects the club.

Helping at club events is a different thing entirely. O-Week, market day, come and try days, launch nights and the presentation nights are exactly what we are asking for.

The simple version: if the night cannot run without you, it is not a volunteer job.

Next step

Put your hand up

About three minutes. Tell us which role and which nights suit you, and we will come back to you within five days either way.
